Welcome to Future Whenua 2022

Future Whenua Summit is an innovative 3-day educational event bringing together people and ideas from across the rural sector.

Our Vision

Future Whenua Summit is back for a second year!

This year we’re moving up to the Hawke’s Bay to be hosted by the excellent land stewards Greg and Rachel Hart at Mangarara station. (March 25th – 27th 2022)

Future Whenua Summit aspires to the deepest possible exploration of how we can redefine our relationship between the land and its stewards. Our scope is distanced from  the “business as usual” mindset with its focus on incremental change (if any) that dominates the rural sector, We are passionate advocates for radical solutions to existential problems and the summit is our annual opportunity to champion that mindset.

We are going to shine light on some progressive concepts and key solutions in our sector. We bring the discussion about the future of land use out of the conference room and onto the whenua. FWS2022 at Mangarara station is going to be an incredible experience and our speaker line up is set to impress. We cant wait to see you there and have a yarn about the future of our whenua.

Schedule

Gates open at midday on March 25th if you want to arrive early and refresh with a coffee by the Mangarara Lodge and explore the summit site.

Please arrive before 2:00pm!

We will kick things off at 2:30pm with a farm tour showcasing the productive history, exciting transition and several innovative trials ongoing at the farm. The tour will also include some insights from Robbie Hill of the Savoury institute for good measure. At 5pm we will start the evening with a panel discussion on the status and direction of NZ agriculture, followed by a classic kiwi bbq showcasing the best edible delights that local producers have to offer.

Starting at 8:30am on both Saturday and Sunday we will move into our line-up of comprehensive talks on a variety of topics regarding land use practices and how they will affect the future of our industry. We have made sure there will be ample time to connect with fellow attendees and discuss the presentations over kai during the breaks.

Each day will feature a hands-on workshop. On Saturday we will be foraging the Mangarara landscape for edible flora under expert guidance. On Sunday we will follow the steps involved in the creation of a no dig garden as well as a co-design session by Circularity to help attendees uncover and explore the opportunities of the circular economy . During our Solution Sessions speakers will talk on their personal approach to some of our industry’s pressing issues.

Subjects will include: NZ food systems, stacking enterprises, entrepreneurship, industrial hemp, regenerative agriculture, Beef + Lamb, worm farming, “multiscapes”, urban horticulture, native biodiversity credits, Te Ao Maori, mycology, consumer dictation, circular systems, regenerative wool and so much more.

On Saturday night after our minds are satiated, we will enjoy a long table dining experience, entertainment and a further opportunity to connect.

The closing talk on Sunday will finish up by 3pm followed by an optional, semi-facilitated discussion. Everyone will be off site by 5pm

Attendance

In light of the ongoing pandemic restrictions and as we strive to continually evolve the model of FWS2022 we are employing a “pay what you think its worth” system for this years summit. If you are in a position to support us financially then we welcome your koha, if you need to save your money for essentials that’s fine too. We understand times are tough and have no interest in restricting access to those who have great ideas but lack the funds to attend.

It is essential that you fill out an attendance form if you plan on coming!

It almost goes without saying but if you are feeling unwell then stay home, we will be publishing video content of the entire summit and will be following that up with a series of webinars with our speakers.

If you’d like to make a donation before the summit click on the link below to be taken to our donation portal, all donations go towards furthering our mission to rethink what it means to be a rural entrepreneur so anything you can support us with is greatly appreciated.

Parting thoughts...

We had an absolute blast at the inaugural summit and 2022 is shaping up to be more exciting on all fronts. We wanted FWS to be different from your average conference and 2022 will be no different, we work with local suppliers, farmers and speakers to bring the unique Hawkes bay flavour to the event and we are talking to some new sponsors to bring an entirely new demographic to the scene.

The world has changed a lot over the last 2 years and change has never been closer in peoples minds, we can’t wait for another opportunity to empower impactful solutions and build an expanded network of innovators, leaders, policy makers and change makers behind a powerful movement.

See you at Mangarara Station!
